As the host of a public access show dedicated to food and fitness and surrounded by family members that had diabetes, Karen knew she had to make significant changes to her lifestyle and lose the weight. In reading an article on a social media site that offered tips for weight loss, she noticed one tip that talked about HealthyWage and making a wager on herself to lose weight.
Already diagnosed as pre-diabetic, Karen signed up for HealthyWage and was surprised to see that she could win $1,500 if she could lose the weight. While this was a huge incentive, she still wanted to lose the weight in a healthy way that would help her keep it off and change her lifestyle. She joined a gym, stopped drinking soda, and switched to a low-carb diet. Instead of eating at the cafeteria at work, she brought her lunch and used the majority of her lunchtime to walk each day. Then, she did strength training at the gym twice a week as well. It wasn’t long before Karen began to feel the positive effects of participating in this challenge.
She had more energy and her colleagues noticed the difference. In looking at her public access television show episodes, she was shocked by the noticeable difference in appearance from the pilot to the final episode. Her clothing size went from a size 20 to a size 10. At a recent work health screening, Karen also discovered that she was no longer pre-diabetic but had excellent blood pressure and glucose levels as well as a BMI that was normal for her height and age. In relating what HealthyWage has done for her, Karen said, “It has made me challenge myself in a healthy way to lose the weight and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.”
