NYC Battle of the Badges is a 12-week team-based weight loss competition between DOC, DSNY, FDNY, and NYPD employees. Participation is voluntary and completely free.
Teams of 8-10 people will compete to lose an average of 6% of their team’s total body weight.
The agency with the greatest percentage of teams achieving the 6% average weight-loss goal wins the Battle of the Badges!
NYC Battle of the Badges begins on Monday, June 3, 2019 and ends on August 23, 2019.
Participation is voluntary and completely free to all employees (uniformed and civilian) of the four uniformed agencies—DOC, DSNY, FDNY, and NYPD. WW will build the jackpot by contributing:
• $5 for every participant.
• an additional $15 for each new or current WW member that participates.
WW’s contribution for each participant helps fund the jackpot. The more participants, the larger the jackpot amount (up to $20,000) that will be donated to the winning agency’s charity of choice!
A jackpot of up to $20,000 will be donated to the winning agency’s charity of choice:
o DOC: COBA Widows’ and Children’s Fund
o DSNY: Foundation for New York’s Strongest and Autism Speaks
o FDNY: FDNY Foundation
o NYPD: NYCPBA Widows’ and Children’s Fund
The 1st place agency will receive the jackpot (capped at $20,000) to donate to the charity of choice. The other 3 agencies will each receive $1,000 to donate to a charity of choice. The more participants in the competition, the bigger the jackpot!
If a tie-breaker is needed, the agency with the highest percentage of their agency participating in the competition will win.
It’s a lot of fun, and it works! Partnering with a team to lose weight can help you stay on-track to reach weight loss goals that can have a positive impact on your quality of life. Studies show that a 5-10% weight loss reduces the risk of chronic diseases (such as high blood pressure and heart disease), it helps manage other conditions (such as type 2 diabetes), and it can improve your mood. Support from other team members at your agency can help you feel encouraged and stay focused even after the competition ends.
There’s also the excitement of competing against other agencies to donate to charity for reaching achievable goals. If your team achieves an average of 6% weight loss, and your agency has the greatest percentage of teams achieving the 6% average weight-loss goal, the jackpot (up to $20,000) will be donated to your agency’s charity of choice. $1,000 will be donated to the charities chose by the other three agencies.

It’s not necessary to be a WW member to participate. But, if you are a member, it will give you an advantage for achieving your weight loss goals and quadruple WW’s jackpot donation for your participation.

Yes, this is a team-based weight-loss competition—we've found that having a team is a great way to stay motivated. You can join a team with any co-workers at your agency. The recommended team size is 8-10 participants. If you don't have a complete team, don't worry—we will match you up with colleagues from your agency when the contest starts.
Don't worry! Our Chief Fun Officer will work with you to make sure you are on a complete team. Once you're signed up, email firstname.lastname@example.org and just ask for assistance. If you've got one or two others signed up with you, we'll also make sure you stay together! Teams will be locked and no changes will be allowed two weeks after the NYC Battle of the Badges start date (if you sign up later than that, your team will remain unlocked for a week), so make sure you let us know right away if you need help!
Ask them to visit the NYC Battle of the Badges sign up page promoted on flyers, posters and/or emails in your agency. They'll need to use the link shown to take part. After they register, they will select which agency they work for and then choose your team from a list.
You can, but you don't need to. Just tell them the name of your team and let them know that they need to register online by going to NYC Battle of the Badges. After they register for NYC Battle of the Badges, they will be prompted to select which agency they work for and then see a page with a list of teams where they can choose your team from a list.
To keep NYC Battle of the Badges fair, so we ask you to verify your starting weight and ending weight.
You will need to do this only two times:
• Once, on or within two weeks after the competition start date, and
• Once again within two weeks before or on the competition end date.
There are two easy ways to verify your weight:
1. Upload a photo of your WW tracker
2. Or get verified at home by making a private weight verification video following these instructions.
To keep you on track and to be sure everyone knows where they stand, we ask you to weigh yourself once a week. You can step on your own scale and then enter it on the HealthyWage website. (You’ll see a green 'add weight' button on your page when you sign in to the site).
These weekly weigh-ins do not need to be verified. But, since the other participants need to know where they stand in NYC Battle of the Badges, it's important for everyone to keep up with weigh-ins. Remember, no one but you will see your individual weight.
Throughout NYC Battle of the Badges, participants can collect digital ribbons. One way to collect digital ribbons is by submitting a weigh-in every week. Other ways to collect ribbons is by being a WW member or by completing individual mini-challenges (there are six in total).
Yes. The competition starts on Monday, June 3. The deadline to join is Sunday, June 16, two weeks after the start of the competition.
No. Your weight is private. No one else will see your actual weight. Other participants will only be able to see your percentage of weight loss.
We take the average of each team member's weight loss percentage, rounded to the nearest tenth (for example 5.1743% would be rounded to 5.2%). To calculate your individual weight loss percentage, take the number of pounds you have lost divided by your starting weight.
If someone on your team doesn't get a weigh-out, that's okay—but we will count their weight loss as 0% for purposes of computing your team's average weight loss. But please note, all members must get an initial weigh-in to complete their registration and be part of a team.

Yes. In order to encourage healthy weight loss, we only count weight loss up to 16.59% per person. Any individual weight loss beyond 16.6% does not count for the competition. So, the winning teams are the ones where each team member gets closest to the cap. Note: If you lose more than 16.6% of your bodyweight, you will not be disqualified, but any extra weight you lose above 16.6% will not be counted toward your team's weight loss average for the competition.

There will also be exciting bi-weekly mini challenges to give participants and teams opportunities to earn digital ribbons. For each mini-challenge, a team or participant must complete a task and send verification (verification types may vary). You’ll get an email once the challenges begin and be awarded a digital ribbon upon completion.
Digital ribbons are a fun way to keep track of your effort and achievements, plus, research shows that you're more likely to lose weight if you divide your goals into mini-goals. Ribbons help you make your mini-goals fun and share them with others.
You can earn ribbons for taking certain actions and for achieving specific milestones throughout the challenge. Ribbons are not required, but they are important because they improve your odds of success. Other ways to collect ribbons are by being a WW member or by completing the individual mini-challenges (there are six in all).
"Team" ribbons will also be awarded for teams achieving certain weight loss and challenge milestones together (like mini-challenges). For the purposes of team aggregate ribbon counts, team ribbons will only count one time toward the team total, even though they are awarded to each individual on the team. For example, a team of 8 may be awarded the 4% Weight Loss ribbon. Each individual on the team (8) will receive this ribbon and it will count toward their personal ribbon total; however, only one ribbon will be counted in the team ribbon count (not 8).
There will be six mini-challenges throughout the competition. These are fun tasks to help you stay on track during the challenge – for example, trying new healthy recipes, trying a new fitness activity and taking a ‘sweaty selfie’, or finding someone to support you on your weight loss journey.
For each mini-challenge, a team or participant must complete a task and send verification (verification types may vary). You’ll get an email once each challenge begins and will receive a digital ribbon upon completion.

No. This competition is not for pregnant employees, or for those who are planning to have bariatric surgery. Your participation in NYC Battle of the Badges can be suspended without penalty to your team if you become pregnant during the competition. If you believe you might be pregnant, email email@example.com to let us know. Your participation in the competition resumes after you are no longer pregnant.
