Cory B. tells his story of how HealthyWage motivated him to reach his weight loss goal, and become a healthier person. Cory lost 66lbs and won $1,000 in our BMI challenge.

I found out about the HealthyWage website early in 2010 and decided to give it a shot. I was heavier than I'd ever been in my life, and the thought of an award for losing weight appealed to me. The appeal was increased when I found out I could increase the amount of the award if I put up my own money, so I did this as well. My goal was set and I was ready to begin. I was a bit skeptical at first, but then I decided that no matter whether the site was legitimate or not, it was time for me to lose weight and this was what would provide the motivation.

I immediately changed my eating habits. Instead of having the extra helping of meat and potatoes at dinner, I opted for drastically less meat and increased my vegetable intake. I switched from two bowls of sugar cereals and toast with peanut butter for breakfast to a more sensible breakfast of fruit and oatmeal. I drank more water. I cut out going out to lunch during the workweek, and instead would have coffee and a granola bar. I would still indulge every now and then at parties, holidays, or other special occasions, but I always had my goal on my mind and I learned to say no to the extra helpings of food.

I increased my physical activity only slightly. I went for more walks during my lunch break, and I opted to take the stairs instead of elevators or escalators whenever feasible.

Before I started my diet, I spoke to my doctor. His recommendations were eat less and exercise more. I ate much less than I had in the past, which was much more than I should have been eating in the first place. I exercised more, but not to the point that I undertook any life altering routines. When I checked in with my doctor at the end of my challenge he asked how I did it. I mentioned that I ate less, ate in a much healthier manner and exercised a bit more. His response was 'Yup, that's all it really takes.'

I achieved my goal through persistence and willpower, and this was enhanced (for me) by the prize at the end of the challenge. Losing the weight was relatively easy once I decided to alter my eating habits. Anyone with the will and determination can achieve their goal just like I did.
